What is AEO, and will it actually bring my business customers?

AEO means shaping your site so AI answers name your business. What it really is, whether it will win you customers, and if it is worth paying for.

AEO stands for answer engine optimisation, and it means shaping your website so the AI tools people now ask for recommendations can read it, trust it, and name your business in the answer. Will it bring you customers. It can, and for some businesses it already is. But it is not a mysterious new dark art, and you almost certainly do not need to buy a package called AEO to get it. Most of the work is the same work that makes a site good for an actual human being.

So what is AEO, in plain words?

Think of it as the younger sibling of SEO. For twenty years the goal was to rank, to be one of the ten blue links on the first page of Google. AEO has a different target. When someone types a question into ChatGPT, or reads the AI summary Google now staples to the top of the results, there are no ten links to fight over. There is one answer, and it either mentions you or it does not.

So AEO is the craft of being the business that answer quotes. Same raw ingredients as good SEO, a fast site, clear writing, straight facts, honest reviews, all pointed at a slightly different judge. That judge used to be a ranking system sorting a list. Now, close to half the time, it is a machine writing a paragraph and deciding which businesses are worth putting in it. As of early 2026, roughly forty-eight percent of Google searches show one of these AI answers before a single normal result. This is not coming. It is here.

Will it actually bring you customers?

Honest answer, it depends on how your customers find you. If people reach you by asking a question, how much does a bathroom reno cost in Auckland, who does emergency plumbing in Botany, best accountant for a small cafe, then being named in the AI answer is worth real money. That person was already halfway to ringing someone. You want it to be you.

If your work comes mostly from repeat clients, word of mouth at the rugby club, or a trade you win on relationships rather than search, then AEO is a nice-to-have, not a lifeline. Do not let anyone frighten you into a retainer over it.

Here is the part worth sitting with. Around sixty-eight percent of Google searches now end without anyone clicking through to a website at all. People get their answer on the results page and move on. That is a grim number if you sell clicks. It is a good number if the answer people read happens to have your name in it. The traffic did not vanish. It moved somewhere you have to earn your way into differently.

Same raw ingredients, a different judge. That is really all AEO is.

Do you need to buy an "AEO package"?

Short version, probably not. Overseas agencies have already spotted the new buzzword and started quoting AEO or GEO retainers that begin around fifteen hundred US dollars a month, stacked on top of whatever you already pay for SEO. Very few small businesses can fund both at full noise, and most do not need to.

Keep your hand on your wallet here. The things that get you named by an AI are boring and mostly free. Answer the real questions your customers ask, in plain text on your own site. Keep your business name, address and phone identical everywhere they show up. Add a bit of structured data so a machine can read your facts without squinting. Earn genuine reviews. None of that is a four-figure monthly product. It is a well-built site and an afternoon of tidying up, which is roughly what we charge for anyway, about NZD 4,000 to 5,000 for a sharp small-business site, not the 6,000 to 10,000 and up most Auckland agencies want.

If someone sells you AEO as a separate magic service with its own invoice, ask them what they are actually doing that a good site does not already do. Watch how fast the answer goes vague.

So what actually moves it?

We wrote the full checklist in will an AI recommend your business, so this stays short. Be readable, be consistent, be reviewed, be fast. Put your prices and services in real words a machine can lift, not trapped inside an image or a slow slideshow. That is the whole game, and it is the same game that wins you human customers. Same direction, same effort.

If you want to know where you stand right now, go and ask. Open ChatGPT and ask it to recommend a business like yours in your suburb, and see whether you turn up. Then have a look at our SEO and AEO page, or flick us a message and we will tell you straight whether it is worth doing anything about. Sites that go boom, not bust.

Quick answers

Is AEO just SEO with a new name?

Not quite, but they share most of their DNA. SEO aims to rank your page in a list of links. AEO aims to get your business named inside the single AI answer at the top. The underlying work, a fast site, clear writing, straight facts and real reviews, overlaps almost completely, which is why paying twice for it rarely makes sense.

How do I check if an AI already recommends my business?

Ask one. Open ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Overview and type the question a customer would, something like best plumber in Botany. If you are not named, look at whether your site actually answers that question in plain words. That gap is usually the whole problem.

Does AEO cost extra on top of a normal website?

It should not, if the site is built properly to begin with. Overseas agencies are already quoting AEO retainers from around USD 1,500 a month on top of SEO. For most small businesses that money is better spent on one well-built site that reads cleanly for people and machines at the same time.
