How to think about website ROI as a tradie
Forget the word "website" for a second. What you are actually buying is a machine that turns strangers into enquiries while you are on the tools, asleep, or fishing. The only question worth asking is whether that machine brings in more than it costs. For most trades and small businesses, the answer is not close.
Work the real numbers. Say 400 people find your site in a month. If it is slow and unclear, maybe 2 percent enquire, so 8 leads. Win 60 percent of those and that is under 5 jobs. Now put up a fast, clear site that gets 5 percent enquiring. That is 20 leads, 12 jobs, seven more than before. At an $800 average, seven extra jobs is $5,600 a month. A site that cost $4,000 has paid for itself inside the first month and keeps paying every month after.
Those aren't fantasy figures. Lifting conversion from 2 to 5 percent is ordinary when the starting point is a tired site. The calculator above lets you plug in your own numbers instead of ours.
Why conversion beats traffic
Most people obsess over getting more visitors. It is the harder, more expensive lever. Ads cost money every single click, and SEO takes months. Conversion is different. The visitors are already there. You are just losing them at the door.
Here is the maths that changes minds. Doubling your traffic doubles your leads and can cost a fortune. Doubling your conversion rate does exactly the same to your leads, costs nothing per visitor, and often just means fixing things that are quietly broken. Two percent to four percent is a doubling. It is also completely achievable. That is why a good build pays back so fast: it is not buying you more visitors, it is stopping the leak.
What actually moves conversion
Conversion is not magic and it is not decoration. A handful of unglamorous things do most of the work:
- Speed. A slow site bleeds enquiries before the page even loads. Every second of delay quietly sends people back to the search results and on to the next tradie.
- An obvious way to call you. Your phone number and a clear "get a quote" button should follow the visitor down the page. If someone has to hunt for how to contact you, most will not bother.
- Proof you are any good. Real reviews, real photos of real jobs, a real face. People hiring a tradie are nervous about getting burned. Proof settles that nerve.
- It has to work on a phone. Most of your visitors are on a phone, often standing in the problem they need you to fix. If the site is a pinch-and-zoom mess, you have lost them.
The honest caveats
A website is not a magic money printer, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. A site can only convert the traffic it gets, so if nobody knows you exist, fix that first. Lead quality varies too. Ten tyre-kickers are worth less than two people ready to book, and no site turns a bad lead into a good one. And a site that looks lovely but is slow, unclear or invisible on Google will not move any of the numbers in that calculator.
What a good site does do, reliably, is win you more of the work that is already looking for you. That is the whole game. Not tricks, not hype. Just turning more of your existing visitors into paying customers, and doing it fast enough that the build pays for itself in months, not years.
